Our School Curriculum
At Hoylandswaine Primary School we provide opportunities for children to develop as independent, confident, successful learners with high aspirations who know how to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society. There is a strong focus on developing children’s moral, spiritual, social and cultural understanding.
We aim for all learners to enjoy their education and make good progress in all areas of learning. Pupils at all levels are supported to achieve their potential. Those who are most able are challenged and supported through our teaching. Those who struggle are encouraged and given targeted support to embed skills, to develop at their own pace or simply to learn in a style that best suits their individual needs.
The school’s curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure thorough acquisition of knowledge is in place in preparation for developing and applying skills across the curriculum. Progress is about knowing more, learning more and doing more with it and our curriculum is based around this premise. In addition to giving diverse and rich opportunities from which children can learn and develop a range of transferable skills, the children's own community is frequently used as a starting point for engaging interest.
Subject leaders play an important part in the success of the curriculum by leading a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review and lead specific areas that drive our curriculum forward eg: our status as a Centre of Excellence for Financial Education, our status as a Fair Trade school and our work with the Arts council on Artsmark. Subjects are planned to ensure progression of knowledge and skills across school. The curriculum design ensures that the needs of individuals and small groups of children can be met within the environment of high quality first wave teaching, supported by targeted, proven interventions where appropriate. Enjoyment of the curriculum promotes achievement, confidence and good behaviour. We constantly review the impact of our curriculum and whole school provision in order to tailor it to the needs of the children.
To promote physical health and wellbeing, a range of extra-curricular clubs gives learners an opportunity to access a variety of sports clubs before and after school hours. Our PSHE approach provides children with opportunities to discuss and learn about personal health, wellbeing, safety, relationships (including anti-bullying work), differences and aspirations. Philosophy for Children is used to raise questions, discuss important issues, learn to listen to the views of others and share their own thoughts. Our diversity work helps children to realise that everyone is special and unique and we should celebrate differences and different kinds of families.
Our Principles of Teaching and Learning:

We currently have a two year (three year in infants) rolling curriculum as our classes will generally be mixed year groups. This programme ensures that all aspects of the national curriculum are undertaken through a range of topics that appeal to the children following their own interests wherever possible.
